ND milk production down in third quarter

FARGO, N.D. - Milk production in North Dakota during July, August and September totaled 95 million pounds, down 8.7 percent from the third quarter of 2008.

The Agriculture Department says the average number of milk cows during the quarter stood at 22,000, down 4,000 from a year earlier and down 1,000 from the previous quarter.

Milk produced per cow was 4,320 pounds, compared with 4,000 pounds last year and 4,260 pounds the previous quarter.

Nationwide, milk production for the three months totaled 46.8 billion pounds, almost unchanged from 2008.
