Redheads Face

Yet Another Prejudice

Redheads Face

First redheads were told they were a dying breed: In 2007, there were bogus news stories that the recessive genes for auburn hair would disappear in a matter of decades. Now ginger bashing is reaching a whole new level, in the world of professional sports: at least one NFL coach apparently thinks redheads might not be professional quarterback material.

This unnamed coach says he might not draft a promising college player named Andy Dalton solely because Dalton has naturally bright orange hair. "Has there ever been a red-headed quarterback in the NFL who's really done well?" he's quoted as saying in Sports Illustrated. "It sounds idiotic, but is there any way that could be a factor? We've wondered."

He's absolutely right: It does sound idiotic. I know coaches and team managers look for unexpected indicators of performance in hopes of spotting and nurturing talent, but this is a little ridiculous. Last time I checked, hand-eye coordination didn't have all that much to do with your hair color. After all, Tom Brady has just plain terrible hair and that hasn't hurt his talent any.
