Minnesota lawmakers from Clay County say they are very concerned about the potential for property tax relief in North Dakota.
Senator Keith Langseth and Representatives Paul Marquart and Morrie Lanning spoke at the county commission meeting in Moorhead Tuesday.
Marquart said North Dakota's budget surplus and oil revenues are threatening Minnesota's ability to remain competitive.
"They key is how do you maintain those aids that equalize the tax base and have a consistency there and keep competitive," said Marquart. "We absolutely must keep property taxes down if we're going to stay competitive with North Dakota. That's the one tax where they have great potential on their side to lower with their surplus."
Marquart mentioned the possibility of reviving the Homestead Tax Credit, but said he does not know how that would be paid for.
Lanning discussed continuing property tax exemptions for new home construction.
