West Fargo Police have recovered a car stolen from a Twin Cities airport with help from a special camera installed in a squad car's light bar.

Assistant Chief Mike Reitan said an automated license plate reader helped police recover the car.

"The cameras scan license plate that come in the field of vision," said Reitan. "The license plate images are then compared against a database that is entered into the National Crime Information Center computer system. When the computer finds a match, the officer is alerted."

West Fargo police have two of the automated license plate readers. Fargo police and the Cass County Sheriff's Office also have the readers.

West Fargo installed their first camera two years ago but this is the first time an arrest has been made locally using the unit.

Margarito Serena, 38, of Moorhead is facing stolen vehicle and driving under revocation charges.
