North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem has approved the merger of Bismarck’s Medcenter One with Fargo and Sioux Falls-based Sanford Health Systems.

In a letter dated Tuesday to Medcenter One legal counsel John Olson, Stenehjem said based upon his review, "there is no legal basis for this office to object to the proposed transaction."

Respective boards for the two health organizations voted unanimously in favor of the merger, and Stenehjem’s opinion makes the merger effective immediately.

Medcenter One and Sanford Health will formally announce the merger on July 12 in Bismarck.

According to state law, the Attorney General has to review a merger of this nature. Stenehjem had been reviewing the merger since the end of May.

Medcenter One is the largest private employer in Bismarck. The organization includes a hospital facility and a number of clinics throughout western and central North Dakota.
