Chief Justice Gerald Vandewalle is asking lawmakers to approve new judgeships for a growing caseload in the oil patch.

The National Center for State Courts says three to six new judgeships are needed, including at least two in northwestern North Dakota.

Vandewalle says he hasn't decided how many judges he'll request.

North Dakota has 44 District Judges.

In the 1990s, the number of judges was cut from 53 under a consolidation plan.
