The work to complete a 4,600 mile footpath that stretches from North Dakota to New York continues quietly.

The North Country National Scenic Trail is one of 11 of America’s National Trails and once finished it will be the longest.

The trail's executive director Bruce Matthews says there's about 500 miles of the trail in North Dakota.

Matthews says while the National Park service oversees the trail and provides some funding, most of the work is done by volunteers.

The North Dakota segment stretches from Wahpeton, through the Sheyenne National Grasslands, to Fort Ransom before ending at Lake Sakakawea State Park.

The North Country Scenic Trail Association is holding its national conference in Michigan this weekend.
