MOORHEAD, Minn. - A decorated veteran of the Clay County Sheriff's Department has been fired.
Deputy Ryan Carey was fired by Sheriff Bill Bergquist on July 25.
County Human Resources Director Darren Brooke says state law prohibits disclosing why Carey was dismissed. But sources tell KFGO News the firing stemmed from an incident this summer in the suburban Twin Cities.
Carey was a deputy since 2001. He's the recipient of the Combat Cross Award and several police canine honors.
Carey is formally appealing his firing.
Bergquist says he can't comment because it's a personnel matter.
