DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) - Dickinson State University has hired a new chief academic officer.

The university has been recovering from an audit's findings that Dickinson State granted degrees and certificates to about 600 Chinese students who didn't qualify for them.

Cynthia Pemberton starts Sept. 1 as Dickinson's new provost and vice president for academic affairs.

She has worked as a professor and administrator at Idaho State University in Pocatello, and as a women's athletics administrator and swimming coach at Linfield College in Oregon.

Dickinson State President D.C. Coston announced Pemberton's appointment Friday. He says she has held a number of leadership jobs, and Idaho State colleagues describe her as "a great communicator'' who is "engaged with students.''

Pemberton says the Dickinson job is a "truly exciting opportunity.''
