MOORHEAD, Minn. - A recently-fired Clay County Deputy was kicked off the force because of events that occurred during a work-related trip to the twin cities area.

Sources tell KFGO News that Deputy Ryan Carey was participating in a law enforcement canine competition. The contest was held June 10, 11 and 12 in Eden Prairie.

Carey is appealing his termination; his attorney, Isaac Kaufman of St. Paul, says, “I’m somewhat hopeful at this stage that we’ll be able to reach some sort of resolution.”

Kaufman says he can't discuss specifically what led to Carey's dismissal, but he says Carey has not been charged with a crime.

Sheriff Bill Bergquist has said he can't comment because it's a personnel issue.
