North Dakota Game & Fish Director Terry Steinwand says it's better to be safe than sorry. That, after someone claimed they saw a mountain lion in a wooded area on the southeast side of Mandan, not far from homes.
Heavily armed police and a USDA wildlife specialist responded to the call and set up a perimeter and went in to search for the animal. Steinwand, who lives nearby, says they flushed out a feline but it wasn't a mountain lion. Steinwand says while it's rare a mountain lion would come close to a populated area, it's not unheard of.
Two years ago, a mountain lion was shot near a home on the south edge of Bismarck.
