BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Turkey growers have donated Thanksgiving birds to North Dakota shelters for abused women and the homeless.

North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple and Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring took part in the Monday presentation at the Capitol.

The turkeys are going to the Ruth Meiers Hospitality House and the Abused Adult Resource Center in Bismarck.

The growers brought a live turkey to the ceremony.

In 2006, then-Gov. John Hoeven tried to handle the bird, and it protested by flapping its wings and trying to take off.
