A Fargo lawmaker has asked the Bismarck Roman Catholic bishop to withdraw statements in a letter prepared for Catholic parishes across the state. The letter, by Bishop David Kagan, tells parishioners to vote for the candidates who represent them as Catholic citizens--not for the candidate who is most likeable.
State Senator Tim Mathern says the bishop is going too far. He says the bishop’s letter crosses the line by telling people how to vote and may violate federal law.
A statement by the North Dakota Catholic Conference says the letter does not mention candidates by name and does not violate any laws. The statement says it would be irresponsible and inappropriate to further discuss the letter at this time.
