The State Archaeologist says there's little doubt in his mind that a landowner knew he was taking down a pioneer cemetary in a field east of Herman, Minnesota.
The sheriff was called after members of the family discovered that trees had been cleared and tombstones moved.
Archaeologist Scott Anfinson says it didn't take long for his phone to ring. He believes it was intentional.
Anfinson says he used satellite mapping and DNR aerial photos to confirm that the cemetary had been there. He drove by the site recently and could clearly see the changes.
He says the act is considered a felony under Minnesota law.
The Grant County attorney will decide whether to charge the landowner.
Sheriff Dwight Walvatne says there's no indication that the graves themselves were disturbed.
