Black Friday got off to its earliest start ever as shoppers put down their turkey and headed straight to the mall.

Stores open in the early morning hours the day after Thanksgiving but Black Friday openings have crept earlier and earlier over the past few years.

More than two-thirds of the stores at West Acres in Fargo opened at midnight. That's twice number a year ago.

Mall manager Rusty Papachek says there were lines outside some stores. He calls it "controlled chaos."

Papachek says the cold weather may impact sales, but he still expects big crowds.

On Black Friday a year ago, West Acres set a new record when nearly 80,000 shoppers hit the stores. That's four times the average daily number.

The North Dakota Retail Association predicts an increase in holiday sales of 6% to 8% over a year ago thanks to a strong regional economy.
