Kelly Kyllo, 53, is accused of having a bobcat carcass in his possession. Rankin was tipped off by text photo's showing the dead animal in a pickup box believed to be owned by Kyllo.

It's believed the carcass was disposed of in Traill County but was not found.

Rankin says the bobcat is considered a protected animal in the state, only allowed to be taken during a limited hunting season in Southwest North Dakota. That season was not open during the time of the investigation. Rankin says it's very rare to find a bobcat in the Red River Valley.

A Grandin, North Dakota man has pleaded not guilty to illegal possession of wildlife.

Gary Rankin, a veteran conservation officer for the North Dakota Game & Fish Department says it's one of the more unusual cases he's investigated
