Fargo Reporter Witnesses South Dakota Inmate Execution

Veteran journalist Dave Kolpack of Fargo was among a handful people who witnessed the execution of South Dakota inmate Eric Robert at the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls Monday night.

 

 

 

 

Veteran journalist Dave Kolpack of Fargo was among a handful people who witnessed the execution of South Dakota inmate Eric Robert at the State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls Monday night.

Kolpack, an Associated Press Correspondant, was ushered into one of four viewing rooms and waited for Robert to receive the lethal injection.

Kolpack says the inmate was strapped into the gurney and the warden asked him if he had any last words. Robert made one statement forgiving the warden, looked up and said, "it is done."

Robert was put to death in the same prison where he killed guard Ronald Johnson in April 2011. It was South Dakota's first execution since 2007 and only the second in 60-years.
