A powerful Republican says NDSU should have allowed a Democratic rally on campus in support of U.S. Senate candidate Heidi Heitkamp.

Organizers were planning to hold the rally, which featured former president Bill Clinton at the Bison Sports Arena. A Heitkamp spokesman says they were denied because NDSU had concerns about having a "partisan rally" on campus.

North Dakota House Majority Leader Al Carlson says NDSU made the wrong call. Carlson says the facility is owned by the citizens of North Dakota, and says anyone willing to pay the costs to rent the building should be allowed to do so.

The North Dakota Board of Higher Education says state law prohibits state property from being used for a political purpose. Heitkamp spokesman Brandon Lorenz says renting the state-owned facility would have been "perfectly legal and reasonable."
