North Dakota’s cities and counties that have home rule charters, like Fargo may soon be able to hit speeders and other traffic offenders with much larger fines under a bill approved in the house.
House Transporation Committee Chairman Dan Ruby says the new law allows home rule governments to double the maximum state fine for speeders, and triple the maximum fine for other violations, like running a stop sign or failing to yield the right of way.
Many of those offenses now carry a $20 fine.
Home rule governments will be able to charge up to $60.
The bill now heads to the senate.
Under current law, “home-rule” governments can’t charge more for traffic offenses than the state does.
