New penalties for illegally baiting deer in Minnesota are now in effect.

The DNR's Richard Sprouse says if convicted, a hunter will not be able to obtain any deer license or take deer under a lifetime license for one year. The state's electronic licensing system would block a convicted hunter from purchasing a license. A second conviction in three-years could result in a three-year revocation of hunting privileges.

Sprouse says the fine for illegal baiting is $300, plus $80 in court costs. He says another $500 can be tagged on for restitution if a deer is seized. Guns and bows can also be confiscated.
