BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota has several areas ranked among the fastest-growing in the nation in new Census Bureau population estimates.

North Dakota Census Committee Chairman Rod Backman says North Dakota's workforce and economy have been expanding for years and the estimates are reflecting the growth.

The boom in the western oil patch is a big reason. The Census estimates show Williston is the fastest-growing micropolitan area in the country, Dickinson is the third-fastest and Minot is 25th-fastest. A micropolitan area is one that has a population between 10,000 and 49,999.

Backman says the estimates refer to residents and not to temporary workers or those who view their home residence as being in another state. He says officials believe there are more than 30,000 people living in crew camps in the oil patch.
