While Fargo's overall crime rate has dropped, it continues to be a problem downtown. That's the reason why police stepped up patrols, added another resource officer and installed surveillance camera's at the request of several businesses.
Unknown to most people, police also launched undercover patrols. Lt. Jeff Skuza says five have been conducted since August. He says plainclothes officers mixed in with downtown crowds and if they observed criminal behavior they called in uniformed officers to take enforcement action.
Police averaged 6 to 8 arrests and 20 citations for each 3 hour operation they conducted. The charges ranged from various drug offenses to disorderly conduct . Skuza says the activity has continued and police may ramp up the special undercover details again.
