Emergency responders from Fargo, Moorhead and the North Dakota Air National Guard are training for the unthinkable: a local terrorist attack involving a radioactive weapon of mass destruction.

The course is being conducted by a team of civilian contractors through the U.S. Department of Energy. Instructor Larry Platte, a senior operations specialist at the Nevada Nuclear Test Site, says the training uses Geiger counters to detect “live”, but safe levels of radioactive material placed on mannequins and inside cars

Assistant Moorhead Fire Chief Chad Stangeland says the three-day course allows firefighters to train for what he calls a "worst case scenario."

Firefighters from Fargo, Moorhead and the Air National Guard are taking the three day course. It's being funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
