Mayor Dennis Walaker has made his almost legendary trip into the southern Red River Valley to assess the spring flood threat, and he believes seeing the ice start to break up now, Fargo should be safe.

Walaker predicts the Red will reach about 32 feet in Fargo, although he says things could change if we get unexpected snow or rain.

Walaker's assessment is not scientific but is based on several decades of watching the snow pack and the spring melt, first as public works director and then as mayor.

The latest outlook by the National Weather Service shows a 90% chance the Red in Fargo will get to major flood stage of 30 feet, a level city leaders say is easily managed.
