Regulators Say Senate Candidate Built Golf Course Without Permits

Federal regulators say Republican U.S. Senate candidate John Raese damaged 2 miles of streams and about one-seventh of an acre of wetlands for waterfalls on a private West Virginia golf course he built without the required permits.

 

 

 

 

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - Federal regulators say Republican U.S. Senate candidate John Raese damaged 2 miles of streams and about one-seventh of an acre of wetlands for waterfalls on a private West Virginia golf course he built without the required permits.

The Environmental Protection Agency ordered Raese to develop a mitigation plan for the damage two years ago. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spokeswoman Sheila Tunney says that work at the Pikewood National Golf Club near Morgantown is ongoing.

EPA has declined comment, but its compliance order says the agency ``reserves the right to seek any remedy available under the law.''

Raese, who is challenging incumbent Democrat Joe Manchin, hinted at the problems at Pikewood last week while calling for abolition of the EPA. He accused the agency of ``terrorizing business.''
