South Dakota Sen. Tim Johnson's Son Eyeing Bid

Although Senator Tim Johnson has not said whether he intends to seek re-election in 2014, some Democrats would like to keep his seat in the family -- and in Democratic hands.

 

 

 

 

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Although Senator Tim Johnson has not said whether he intends to seek re-election in 2014, some Democrats would like to keep his seat in the family -- and in Democratic hands.

Party activists are promoting the idea of Johnson's son, Brendan, who is U.S. attorney, seeking the nomination if the senator retires, as some believe he will.

The 66-year-old Johnson has $1.2 million in his campaign account to use if he runs.

But he would face a tough race in a Republican-leaning state, and he still suffers some effects from a 2006 brain hemorrhage.

Thirty-seven-year-old Brendan Johnson has declined to discuss a possible race.

Former Democratic U.S. Representative Stephanie Herseth Sandlin is also considered a possible candidate.

On the Republican side, former Governor Mike Rounds has announced plans to run.
