Voters Say No To New Courthouse For Griggs County

Voters in eastern North Dakota's Griggs County have defeated a $2 million bond issue to build a new courthouse.

 

 

 

 

COOPERSTOWN, N.D. (AP) -Voters in eastern North Dakota's Griggs County have defeated a $2 million bond issue to build a new courthouse.

The measure on Tuesday's ballot got support from only 49 percent of voters when 60 percent approval was required.

It was the third such vote in the past 14 months. Two previous proposals that were more expensive also were defeated.

The courthouse was built in 1883 in Cooperstown and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Mold and health-related issues prompted the county's social services and sheriff's departments to move out of the lowest floor about two years ago.
