Bismarck, N.D. (AP) The Commanding Officer of a Navy nuclear submarine being named for North Dakota says construction of the ship is about 80 percent complete.
Navy Cmdr. Douglas Gordon told the North Dakota Senate and House on Friday that the ship's crew has seen an outpouring of support from North Dakotans, who have sent Sailor everything from cookies to christmas cards.
The USS North Dakota will have a crew of 120 sailors and 15 officers. He says the $2.6 billion vessel will be "the most capable and technically advanced submarine in the world'' when it is commissioned in mid-2014.
The submarine will be the first navy vessel to carry North Dakota's name in more than 90 years.
