Fire departments from every community in Northwest Minnesota's Norman County, along with departments from Moorhead, Crookston, Mahnomen and Waubun, more than a dozen in all, battled a massive fire that destroyed most of a grain elevator complex in downtown Ada. The Triple Crown Elevator processed oats for race horses.
The fire was reported around 6 Thursday night. Fire crews were still on scene Friday morning, mopping up hot spots. Fire department spokeman Kim Lewis says a cause has not been determined. A maintenance crew was doing some work in the elevator prior to the fire.
Firefighters were able to save a newer addition to the grain complex. No injuries were reported. Ada's water supply was drained dry twice as crews pumped thousands of gallons of water on the blaze. Tanker trucks had to retrieve water from nearby Hendrum and Twin Valley.
