A proposal to give research money to North Dakota’s wine industry doesn’t sit well with the chairman of the state senate’s agriculture committee.

Park River republican Joe Miller says the $100,000 grant is “ridiculous”.

Miller says the grape growers don’t have a good plan, and they’re not willing to put their own money into the research effort.

But the senate voted 26-to-20 to approve the $100,000 in grant money.

It’s part of a bill that requires North Dakota’s agriculture commissioner to appoint a grape and wine advisory committee.

The bill now goes to the North Dakota house for additional work.
