BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - New North Dakota college students have an extra entrance requirement this fall.

If they live in campus housing, they must be vaccinated against meningitis.

North Dakota's Board of Higher Education has approved the rule.

The state Department of Health says a number of states have a similar vaccination requirement.

Health Department immunization coordinator Abbi Pierce says meningitis is caused by bacteria and can get serious very quickly.

She says it can spread among people living in close quarters.

Symptoms include nausea, vomiting and increased sensitivity to light.

Pierce says North Dakota already requires middle schoolers to be vaccinated against meningitis, so many new college students should already be protected.

Pierce says it's also a good time for parents of preschoolers to make sure their children's vaccinations are on schedule.
