The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is encouraged by public response to the fight against aquatic invasive species that foul lake vegetation and other marine life.
Preliminary reports show that during fishing opener weekend, DNR spot checks found fewer violations.
Phil Meier said common violations include failure to pull boat drain plugs and failure to bring water to refill bait buckets after draining.
"We found a 12 percent violation rate compared to what we saw last year, upwards around 20," said Meier. "We wrote 65 criminal citations, 120 civil citations and 263 written warnings."
The DNR is spearheading the effort to stop the spread of invasive species like zebra mussels and eurasian milfoil.
