New Technique Being Used On ND Oil Patch Roads

The North Dakota Department of Transportation is using a new technique to help roads in the western oil patch withstand heavy truck traffic.

 

 

 

 

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) - The North Dakota Department of Transportation is using a new technique to help roads in the western oil patch withstand heavy truck traffic.

Clayton Schumaker with DOT says the technique known as white topping involves placing a 6-8-inch layer of concrete on an asphalt roadway. It already has been used in other areas of the state, including U.S. Highway 2 near Rugby.

Officials say the concrete overlay method is a cost-effective way to improve the load-carrying capacity of roads and increase safety.

ACME Concrete Paving Vice President Robert Seghetti tells The Forum newspaper that white topping should eliminate the ruts that have been occurring on some oil patch roads. ACME is using the technique on U.S. 2 near Williston.
