Two environmental groups are warning that the upper Midwest is in for unusually high amounts of rain.

The National Resource Defense Council and the Rocky Mountain Climate Organization said the rain is a result of climate change.

Rocky Mountain group member Steve Saunders said climate change has an effect beyond the polar regions.

"This is a local matter, this is not just melting polar ice caps or threats to polar bears, all of which matter," said Saunders. "This affects people where they live."

Saunders said data shows that storms with three inches of rain or more in a 24 hour span have increased 104 percent in Minnesota since 1961.

A United Nations report on climate change is consistent with the group's claims.
