Lawmakers Weigh Potential Oil Pros, Cons In SD

Fifteen lawmakers are meeting in Buffalo to hear concerns about potential oil development in northwestern South Dakota.

 

 

 

 

BUFFALO, S.D. (AP) - Fifteen lawmakers are meeting in Buffalo to hear concerns about potential oil development in northwestern South Dakota.

Republican Rep. Roger Solum of Watertown says the lawmakers are there "just to listen.''

Buffalo is a town of fewer than 400 people. South Dakota lawmakers and residents are exploring the problems and the benefits that are happening in western North Dakota, where oil production is booming, as South Dakota explores the potential of a smaller-scale boom.

South Dakota has produced about 1.6 million barrels of oil annually for the last several years. North Dakota exceeds that production in fewer than three days.

While North Dakota's oil boom has generated millions of dollars, it also has created traffic, housing and infrastructure headaches.
