GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) - The University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences has been awarded a five-year, $1.6 million federal grant to operate a statewide cancer registry.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the registry is aimed at providing a ``cancer early warning system for the state.''

Cancer registries collect data including tumor type, stage of disease, treatment and demographic information.

The data often provides clues for research into the causes of cancer.
