Wahpeton based Minn-Dak farmers cooperative has taken corrective actions and paid a $70,000 penalty to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency following an investigation into a complaint of smelly, polluted waters in Wilkin County.
The MPCA investigated after receiving a complaint in May 2011 about polluted water in drainage area's that feed into the Rabbit River. The investigation traced the problem to runoff discharges at three of Minn-Dak's sugarbeet storage locations.
The cooperative was also cited for failing to immediately report the discharge problems and for not taking immediate steps to correct the issue.
