U.S. Attorney Tim Purdon says the recent rise in synthetic drug use in the Grand Forks area is similar to the increase seen in the popularity of heroin in Fargo-Moorhead in 2011.

"And that's something we're still seeing in the Fargo-Moorhead area," said Purdon. "We brought law enforcement together in a very similar way to talk about enforcement and to talk about public awareness. We had a program down in Fargo-Moorhead to talk about the spike in heroin. Now we've seen this spike right now here in Grand Forks-East Grand Forks with synthetic drugs."

Two deaths in Grand Forks-East Grand Forks in June have been linked to synthetic drugs. Two people have been charged, including one man who faces a murder charge.
