Former North Dakota Governor George Sinner has come out against a religious freedom measure set to appear on the June 12th ballot.
Former North Dakota Gov. George Sinner has come out against a religious freedom measure set to appear on the June 12th ballot.
Sinner calls Measure 3 dangerous.
"I've never felt so strongly about a resolution that this is a bad one," said Sinner. "It portends bad things."
Religious rights are currently protected by the First Amendment, but a Measure 3 sponsoring committee said that is not enough. Measure 3 would amend the constitution by adding "government may not burden a person's or religious organization's religious liberty."
"It gives protection to the people," said Measure 3 Committee Chair Tom Freier. "Without the compelling interest test, that really allows the government to infringe on our religious beliefs for very little reason at all."
Freier said 27 other states already have similar religious freedom language in the constitution.
