Conservation officers will be out this holiday weekend looking for boaters who fail to make sure they are not transferring mussels and other damaging species from one waterway to another.

The Department of Natural Resources is ramping up its inspections to make certain boats are drained of water, vegetation and species like zebra mussels.

"Once a water body has an invasive species in it, it is pretty much impossible to get it out," says Heidi Wolf of the DNR. "It's really important to prevent the spread by cleaning your boat, removing any plants, animals and mud and draining all water that might be in your boat.

Wolf said 100 watercraft inspectors will be out this weekend checking boats, trailers and related gear.
