A North Dakota lawmaker and former state trooper says the state's drunk driving penalties are ridiculously low.

Ed Gruchalla says heartbreaking accidents like the one on Interstate 94, near Jamestown, that killed four people, including three members of a West Fargo family, shouldn't have to happen.

Gruchalla says next legislative session he will be pushing for higher penalties for DUI's including, increased fines, extending the length of license suspensions and longer jail time.

Troopers say about half the fatal accidents in North Dakota involve alcohol.
