The North Dakota State Board of Higher Education has directed the University of North Dakota to retire its Fighting Sioux nickname during a meeting in Fargo on Thursday.
This follows Tuesday's statewide vote to uphold the legislature's repeal of the law that required UND to use the name.
Board President Grant Shaft told KFGO News it has been a long, drawn out issue that is finally coming to an end.
"It seems as though once the people have spoken, it's pretty difficult to envision any other resolve to this at this point," said Shaft.
The Fighting Sioux nickname and logo that the NCAA has labeled "hostile and abusive" had been brought out of retirement for a second time while the measure was decided.
