A Minnesota DNR official is shocked by the high number of violations handed out this spring for boaters not obeying state regulations aimed at stopping the spread of aquatic invasive species.

Major Phil Meier said since the May fishing opener, enforcement officers have written out 193 criminal citations, 463 civil citations and 900 written warnings.

Meier expected a drop in citations after heavy publicity about the laws and that every available DNR officer would be out checking for violators.

Meier spoke at the annual lake association meeting in Detroit Lakes.
