National Law Enforcement Memorial Day was marked in Fargo on Tuesday.
Police officers, sheriff's deputies and highway patrol troopers gathered in Lindenwood Park to recognize officers killed while on the job last year. Nationwide, 166 officers died. Two officers were killed in both Minnesota and South Dakota.
U.S. Attorney Tim Purdon spoke of the two officers who died in North Dakota.
"Here in North Dakota in 2011, we were reminded that we are not immune to deadly violence aimed at police officers," said Purdon. "It had been 15 years since names were added to the North Dakota Law Enforcement Memorial in Bismarck, and last week I attended as two additional names were added to that monument."
Bismarck Police Sergeant Steve Kenner died when he was shot by a man during a domestic argument. Burleigh County Sheriff's Deputy Bryan Sleeper suffered a heart attack while he struggled with a man during a traffic stop.
