North Dakota House majority leader Al Carlson wants to eliminate the state income tax.
The state is expected to collect $427 million in income tax from 2011. Carlson says he would like to see that money put back in the hands of the people instead of the government.
Fargo State Senator Tim Mathern says reducing taxes is a good idea, but the income tax is not the way to do it. He'd rather see a change in property tax instead.
Tax cuts will be discussed during the next legislative session.
The state income tax has been reduced by 17 percent the last two biennium’s.
