A teacher at St. Joseph School in Moorhead will not be back in the fall after questioning the position of the Catholic Church on gay marriage.
In a letter to families at the school, fifth grade teacher Trish Cameron said she was told that she would not be offered a contract based on her response to a self-evaluation that asked whether she supported the teachings of the church. She responded that she did not agree with the church's stance against gay marriage. Cameron said she was then asked to write a letter of resignation.
In a separate letter to parents at St. Joseph's School, Monsignor Mike Foltz said Cameron's departure was an unfortunate circumstance. He said the school holds itself to a standard to embrace the church's teachings, particularly sacred scripture and sacred tradition.
Cameron had been at the school for 11 years.
