People from across the United States will be unearthing the past in a series of public dinosaur digs underway this summer across North Dakota.

The latest dig will begin on Saturday in the Pembina River Gorge near Walhalla.

State Paleontologist John Hoganson said it has been several years since they have worked the fossil rich river gorge.

"We're excited about going back in there because we have found previously the remains of mosasaurs, these large marine reptiles, sharks and even giant squid fossils have been found at this site," said Hoganson. "We're real anxious to get back there and see what we find this year."

The fossils that have been recovered in the Walhalla area are 60 to 75 million years old.

Other public digs are being conducted this summer in western North Dakota. Two are near Medora and another is in the Marmath area.
