PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard is authorizing overtime and extending the hours of operation at Sioux Falls driver exam stations to address long wait times.

Staff shortages combined with the traditionally busy summer season have resulted in longer than normal wait times in South Dakota's largest city.

Daugaard says the agency will institute aggressive hiring and training programs to fill vacancies, develop an advance scheduling system, add self-service kiosks at several offices and allow residents in immediate need of renewal to call the state for a six-month temporary license.

The governor says the state has an obligation to bring wait times for applicants to acceptable levels. He says two hours is too long to wait.
