ND Lawmakers Backing Some Guardianship changes

North Dakota lawmakers say they support strengthening the rights of people who are candidates to be put under a guardian's supervision.

 

 

 

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota lawmakers say they support strengthening the rights of people who are candidates to be put under a guardian's supervision.

They're more cautious about making other changes, such as who pays for the system.

North Dakota's guardianship system is run by counties and the state Department of Human Services.

A consultant's report says it is underfunded and lacks oversight.

The Legislature's interim Human Services Committee is drafting proposals to change the system.

One would give the person whose being put into guardianship the right to attend a hearing where the decision is made.

They would also be given a description of their rights.

Fargo state Rep. Kathy Hogan says North Dakota's guardianship system works well in some ways, but she says it needs improvements.
