N.D. Campaign Law Questioned In Wake Of Ruling

Supporters of eliminating North Dakota's property taxes say they are disappointed by a state Supreme Court ruling on campaign laws.

 

 

 

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Supporters of eliminating North Dakota's property taxes say they are disappointed by a state Supreme Court ruling on campaign laws.

The court says only prosecutors have authority to enforce North Dakota's "corrupt practices act."

The law makes it a crime to spread false campaign information and spend public funds on campaign work.

Backers of the Measure 2 constitutional amendment to abolish property taxes sued some public officials over their campaign tactics. They said the officials were violating the law. But the Supreme Court affirmed an earlier decision to dismiss the lawsuit.

Tax Commissioner Cory Fong says the ruling is correct and the law isn't being broken anyway.

Bismarck attorney Lynn Boughey represents property tax opponents. He says the ruling lets politicians get away with lying.
